NBSS  was established in 1926 by Padma Vibhushan Tarabai Modak. In 1945 Padmashri Anutai Wagh joined Tarabai Modak  to start an experimental school for tribal children, at Kosbad, District Palghar. Balwadi (playschool) was set up  in a thickly forested tribal area in Bordi. There was no road, electricity or any kind of communication. But need overrode inconveniences. There were eight tribal hamlets nearby and about a hundred children  in need of education. The school was inaugurated by B G Kher, Chief Minister of the then Bombay Presidency on December 24, 1945. The centre moved to its present location in Kosbad Hill in 1957. Today NBSS still functions at Kosbad Hill, in Dahanu Taluka of Palghar district, in Maharashtra, as a guiding institution in pre-primary & primary education.

2017, NBSS recd. Govt. permission to start secondary and higher secondary education in un-aided mode. The first batch of IX std has given the final exam and these students will study in X std.

In 2018 - The first batch will appear for X std exam in Feb 2019.Govt. permission for XI & XII Arts and Commerce (Higher Secondary -unaided) has been recd. 2018 July is the planned start for  Higher Secondary.

Funds are required  for Library, laboratory, computer centre  and other school infrastructure. There is a need to give educational support to the teachers. This will help them to cope up with the new syllabus.
