Monsoon Trail at NANNAJ BUSTARD SANCTUARY

Nannaj Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary : (established in 1979, also known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary of Maharashtra) is a sanctuary for the Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) at Sholapur, Maharashtra This is a vast grassland / scrub land. The sanctuary is approximately 25 kms from Solapur in a small village called Nannaj. The total area covered under sanctuary is approximately 600 hectares. However, it is a discontinuous area which is divided into various plots. The area is called <100 hectare > which is a core area of the sanctuary where the breeding pair has been observed. It is believed that there are less than 250 GIBs in the world and they are critically endangered. Recent census estimates only 4 Great Indian Bustards are left in the sanctuary.

Mode of Travel: Train/Bus up to Solapur and local travel by Non-AC Jeeps 

Participants have to arrange for their own travel by train/bus to Solapur and back.

18^th August >> Night departure for Solapur (Train  >>12115 Mumbai Solapur Siddheshwar Express).

Day 1

19^th August - 7.00AM >> Reach Solapur  Station and move to hotel, fresh up & quick breakfast

                        8.00 AM >>  Start morning safari

                        12.30PM >> Lunch

                        3.00PM  >>Second safari

                        7.00PM  >> return to hotel

                        8.00PM  >> Discussion about the Habitat and Biodiversity

                        9.00PM  >>Dinner

Day 2

20^th August - 6.00AM  >>Wake up call,

                        7.00AM  >>Morning safari with packed breakfast

10.00PM >> Departure for Mumbai (Train -12116 Solapur-Mumbai Siddheshwar Express)

21^st August  >> 6.00am >> Reach at Mumbai

Birds >> Great Indian Bustard,  Indian Eagle Owl, many other grassland birds like Quails, Francolins, Sandgrouse,  Indian Coursers, Doves, Baya Weavers, Grey Shrike, Larks, Lapwings, Thick-knee, Cuckoos and  Pipits... also Coot, Moorhens, Ducks, Storks, Jacanas and other waterfowls at some nearby wetlands.

Mammals >> Indian Wolf, Blackbuck, Black-naped Hare, Indian Fox, Common Gerbil, Indian Grey Mongoose.
